The Beginner's Guide To Mastering
Natural Light Portrait Photography
"Here's how to forget the frustration of trying to use complicated lighting equipment, turn any location into your studio, and consistently produce gorgeous natural-light portraits in any situation! "
"I've done it, and hundreds of my students have too. If you own a digital SLR camera, you've got what it takes to create beautiful natural light portraits -- easier than you ever thought possible -- guaranteed."
From: Cindy Bracken, Goodyear, AZ
If you're like me, you LOVE portrait photography! However, portrait photography is one of the most difficult genres of photography there is, in my opinion. Especiallly when you are photographing children or other difficult subjects. The LAST thing you need is to be messing around with difficult lighting equipment that fails to deliver the results you want anyway.
What could be easier than just using your camera...and no other equipment...to get the stunning images you crave? Imagine being able to:
CONSISTENTLY produce gorgeous portraits of groups, children, babies, pets...anyone!
Find great lighting anywhere...make the world your studio
NEVER have that "sinking feeling" when you view your images ever again!
Save thousands of dollars on expensive studio lighting and flash equipment!
Sounds simple, but you may be wondering:
How to use the manual controls on your camera to get proper exposure
(you won't believe how simple this is once you understand the secret!)
How to tell "good" light from "bad" (I'll clue you in on the best times of day to shoot, and what to do if you have to shoot in less than desirable conditions!)
How to to break away from that "snap shot" look (the 3 things you MUST do for a professional looking portrait)
How to avoid unflattering shadows on your subject's face (easily solved with the little trick I'll tell you about!)
How to combat the "flat lighting" that open shade can present (and get those skin tones that really glow!)
How to get those bright, beautiful eyes to really sparkle!
How to correctly use a light meter (and the difference between using your
on-camera meter vs. a hand held light meter)
How to choose the best lens for natural light portraits (and not spend a fortune)
How to properly use reflectors and diffusers...even without an assistant (no, you won't have to grow a third arm!)
What to do if you don't have a light meter (an easy-to-remember forumula that will set you on the right path)
"Finally, YOU can create the images you've always dreamed about!"
I absolutely love the Natural Light Project! I also love the movie clips. I think the post-processing secrets are worth the price alone. I have tried other actions to POP the colors but they always blew out the highlights, now I can control the intensity to just the areas I want and it makes the picture POP PERFECTLY! I have ordered a 85mm 1.8 lens, light meter and reflector arm and I am excited to try them out using your suggestions. I understood a lot about good lighting before but I did learn some new things. I also need help feeling confident out of manual mode and am excited to put my new knowledge to the test. Thanks so much!
I'm Cindy Bracken, professional photographer and mom to two girls. Like many of you, my love of photography really blossomed with the birth of my first child. I longed to take beautiful images of her. And while I do love capturing images in my studio using my lights, my favorite portraits are always the ones that are taken either outside using natural lighting, or indoors using window light.
It wasn't always this way. Once upon a time, all I ever did was leave my camera on it's automatic setting whenever taking natural light photos. They always came out looking like snapshots. Achieving good, professional-looking portraits was still a mystery.
I practiced as much as possible, and read everything I could about photography. Gradually, I improved. And now, I'm confident EVERY TIME I do a photo session that the images will be good. Sometimes even great! I'm always happy and pleased to show my work to clients. All of the images you see on this page were taken with my Canon 20D using all natural lighting and no other equipment.
And I'd like to show YOU how to do it, too!
